K-pop light stick names in Korean: 아미밤, 뿅봉, 캐럿봉

The BTS light stick is 아미밤 — ARMY plus 밤, which is how "bomb" is spelled in Hangul. Of the three names in this article it is the only one that is pure transliteration: nothing inside it is a Korean word, so there is nothing for a translator to reason about. We translate fan messages into Korean all day, in 28 languages, and when we measured this one, "ARMY Bomb" survived in roman letters one time out of two.

Half-right is the hard case. On a screen those roman letters look harmless. Our handwriting grid is Hangul-only, so they drop out entirely, and what is left to copy is a card with a hole where the light stick used to be. We pinned the spelling to 아미밤 and it has come back that way on every run since. That is the first of three failure patterns: a pure transliteration doesn't get translated wrong, it just doesn't get translated.

BLACKPINK's light stick is 뿅봉, and its English name is Bl-ping-bong. It is built the opposite way from 아미밤: 뿅 comes from 뿅망치, the squeaky toy hammer the stick is shaped like, and 봉 is the ordinary Korean word for a stick. Jisoo is credited with the name. Both halves are Korean, and that is exactly what makes it breakable. Across four runs we got the right answer once. Twice it produced 블핑봉, a compound built on the group's Korean nickname that we found no fans actually using, and once 뽀용봉, which is not a word. None of those outputs look broken from the outside: they are Hangul, they are pronounceable, they would go onto a card without a fuss. That is the second pattern — a name made of Korean parts gets reassembled into a different, plausible Korean word, and the result gives no sign that anything went wrong. With the spelling pinned, all four runs came back 뿅봉.

SEVENTEEN's is 캐럿봉 — the fandom name 캐럿, transliterated, plus the native 봉 — which went on sale in February 2017, timed to the group's first fanmeeting. It sits between the other two, half borrowed and half Korean, and it broke in a third way that neither of them did. Typed as one word, "caratbong", it came through fine. Written with a space, "carat bong", it came back once as 카럿 뿅봉 and once as 아미밤: the other two fandoms' light sticks, the exact two we had pinned in the two weeks just before.

That is the pattern worth naming. We add a handful of fandom words every week, and every addition widens the pull of the ones already in there — an input shaped like a light stick gets pulled toward whichever light stick was pinned most recently. It is a side effect of the fixing rather than of the model, and it only becomes visible if you keep score across weeks. Notice too what it costs: 아미밤 is a real, correctly spelled Korean word, so this failure leaves no trace at all, unlike the roman letters in the first section. The fix was therefore not a better spelling. We wrote down that a light stick name belongs to exactly one group and can never stand in for another, and 캐럿봉 has come back clean on every run since.
