Thank you for making my life happy in Korean: 12 lines

제 삶을 행복하게 해줘서 고마워요 and eleven more: seven swap what sits in front of 줘서, the last four switch to 덕분에, and all twelve fit a handwritten card

How do you say 'thank you for making my life happy' in Korean?

제 삶을 행복하게 해줘서 고마워요. The working part is -아/어 줘서 고마워요: take a verb, put it in its -아/어 form, and the sentence thanks someone for doing that thing. 해줘서 is 하다, to do, carrying 주다, to give — and 주다 is what makes the line warm, because it says the thing was done for someone, not merely done. When it is something they made you feel rather than something they did, -게 하다 steps in first: 웃다, to laugh, becomes 웃게 해줘서. Notice what is missing: no word for 'you' appears anywhere in it.

We sent this sentence to our own translator twice from each of six source languages, and most of what the twelve runs show is what our prompt had already decided. It hands the model 고마워요 for thanks, demonstrates -아/어 줘서 고마워요 six times across five different verbs, and forbids 당신 outright. So twelve of twelve ending in 고마워요 with no 'you' anywhere, and ten of the twelve landing on the 줘서 frame, are rules firing rather than findings — and the two that left the frame invented nothing either: they reached for 덕분에 행복해요, another entry in the same list. What the prompt never supplies is the filler in front of 줘서, because this sentence is not in its phrasebook. That is the one place the runs had to choose for themselves, and they split down the middle: of the ten that stayed on the frame, five folded the happiness into a noun phrase (행복한 삶을 만들어줘서, 'for making a happy life') and five left it modifying the verb (행복하게 해줘서).

  • Thank you for making my life happy — 제 삶을 행복하게 해줘서 고마워요 (je salmeul haengbokhage haejwoseo gomawoyo) Make this into a card
  • Thank you for making a happy life — 행복한 삶을 만들어줘서 고마워요 (haengbokhan salmeul mandeureojwoseo gomawoyo) Make this into a card
  • Thank you for making me happy — 행복하게 해줘서 고마워요 (haengbokhage haejwoseo gomawoyo) Make this into a card
  • Thank you for making every day shine brighter — 매일을 더 빛나게 해줘서 고마워요 (maeireul deo binnage haejwoseo gomawoyo) Make this into a card

What else can go in front of 줘서?

태어나줘서 고마워요 is the line fans put on birthday banners — a fan-culture fixture, and also nothing more exotic than this same pattern with 태어나, to be born, sitting in the front slot. Our Korean birthday messages cover that occasion properly. We ran 'thank you for being born' from three source languages, twice each, and all six came back as this exact line — which is less of a result than it looks, because our prompt hands the phrase over whole, under a heading telling the model to prefer it to a literal translation. What the prompt did not settle was the spelling: 태어나줘서 four times, 태어나 줘서 twice. Korean accepts both, since a 보조용언 may be written joined or spaced, and our own prompt happens to write it joined in one place and spaced in another — so the split is at least as likely to be our inconsistency coming back at us as anything about Korean.

  • Thank you for being born — 태어나줘서 고마워요 (taeeonajwoseo gomawoyo) Make this into a card
  • Thank you for letting me hear your voice — 목소리 들려줘서 고마워요 (moksori deullyeojwoseo gomawoyo) Make this into a card
  • Thank you for making me laugh — 웃게 해줘서 고마워요 (utge haejwoseo gomawoyo) Make this into a card
  • Thank you for letting me meet you — 만나게 해줘서 고마워요 (mannage haejwoseo gomawoyo) Make this into a card

When does Korean use 덕분에 instead?

-줘서 고마워요 thanks a person for an action. 덕분에 means 'thanks to': it names the cause and then reports what happened, so the thank-you word at the end becomes optional. We rebuilt the English around 'because of you' — four sentences, two passes each — and all eight came back with 덕분에, none with 줘서. Honesty first, though: our prompt carries 덕분에 행복해요 as a worked example, so this fork is one we built rather than one Korean imposes. And it leaks. The unchanged English 'thank you for making my life happy' also came back as 덕분에 both times it was sent from English, with 고마워요 still on the end; the first line below is that run with the tail trimmed off.

Formality moves on a different axis. Our translator has a floor it cannot go under — it is required to write 존댓말 and never 반말 — which is why 'thank you for being born' never came back as 태어나줘서 고마워, the 반말 version of the same line. Above that floor it follows you: 'I am deeply grateful that you gave me happiness' climbed to 행복을 주셔서 깊이 감사드려요 both times (감사해요 on the second run), with the honorific 주셔서 and 감사. Which rung to stand on is a separate question, and our Korean thank-you messages walk that ladder.

  • Thanks to you, my life became happy — 덕분에 제 삶이 행복해졌어요 (deokbune je salmi haengbokhaejyeosseoyo) Make this into a card
  • Thanks to you, I can smile again — 덕분에 다시 웃을 수 있어요 (deokbune dasi useul su isseoyo) Make this into a card
  • Thanks to you, every single day is special — 덕분에 매일매일이 특별해요 (deokbune maeilmaeiri teukbyeolhaeyo) Make this into a card
  • Thanks to you, I learned how to love myself — 덕분에 저 자신을 사랑하는 법을 배웠어요 (deokbune jeo jasineul saranghaneun beobeul baewosseoyo) Make this into a card
