Happy New Year in Korean: 12 lines for your K-pop idol

새해 복 많이 받으세요, year-end thanks and Seollal lines for a fan card — copy, personalize, handwrite

How do you say Happy New Year in Korean?

새해 복 많이 받으세요 is a polite wish for good fortune in the new year. Use it for both January 1 and Seollal, the Korean Lunar New Year. Choose a greeting below, or add a wish for health or a promise of continued support.

  • Happy New Year (literally: may you receive lots of good fortune in the new year) — 새해 복 많이 받으세요 (saehae bok mani badeuseyo) Make this into a card
  • I hope the new year brings you only good things — 새해에는 좋은 일만 가득하길 바랄게요 (saehaeeneun joeun ilman gadeukagil baralgeyo) Make this into a card
  • I'll keep supporting you in the new year, same as always — 새해에도 언제나처럼 계속 응원할게요 (saehaeedo eonjenacheoreom gyesok eungwonhalgeyo) Make this into a card
  • Please stay healthy in the new year too — 새해에도 건강하세요 (saehaeedo geonganghaseyo) Make this into a card

Which Korean lines thank an idol for the year?

고마웠어요 looks back with thanks; 올해 means “this year,” so these first three lines suit a year-end card. 덕분에 means “thanks to you,” as in our guide to thank-you messages. 우리 오래오래 봐요 invites a lasting connection; it does not promise a specific meeting.

  • Thank you so much for this year — 올 한 해 정말 고마웠어요 (ol han hae jeongmal gomawosseoyo) Make this into a card
  • Thanks to you, I laughed a lot this year — 덕분에 올해 많이 웃었어요 (deokbune olhae mani useosseoyo) Make this into a card
  • The best thing I did this year was becoming your fan — 올해 한 일 중 제일 잘한 건 팬이 된 거예요 (olhae han il jung jeil jalhan geon paeni doen geoyeyo) Make this into a card
  • Let's keep seeing each other for a long, long time — 우리 오래오래 봐요 (uri oraeorae bwayo) Make this into a card

What do you write for Seollal, the Lunar New Year?

설날 is Seollal, and 떡국 is the rice-cake soup associated with it. For a holiday greeting, choose 즐거운 설날 보내세요. In our small translation test, English and Japanese Lunar New Year greetings produced 설날 축하해요 in all four runs. We edited the card selection rather than recommending that less idiomatic greeting. Those four results describe this sample, not every future translation. See also our Chuseok greetings.

  • Have a happy Seollal — 즐거운 설날 보내세요 (jeulgeoun seollal bonaeseyo) Make this into a card
  • Enjoy your tteokguk — 떡국 맛있게 드세요 (tteokguk masitge deuseyo) Make this into a card
  • Please let us hear lots of good songs in the new year too — 새해에도 좋은 노래 많이 들려주세요 (saehaeedo joeun norae mani deullyeojuseyo) Make this into a card
  • This is my first letter of the new year — 새해 첫 편지예요 (saehae cheot pyeonjiyeyo) Make this into a card
