What does ENGENE (엔진) mean?
ENGENE, written 엔진 in Korean, is ENHYPEN's official fan club name, announced in a video on Weverse on October 9, 2020. It carries two meanings: the fans are an engine that drives ENHYPEN's growth, and ENHYPEN and the fans share the same gene, connecting, discovering and growing together. 엔진 is also the ordinary Korean word for engine.
Our app translates fan messages from 28 languages into Korean, and before November 1, 2026, our translator handled ENGENE well only in its easy forms. ENGENE as the subject of a sentence mostly came back as 엔진, but next to “us” or “we” it often slid into other words. “thank you for always taking care of us engenes, Jake” came back wrong in 9 of 11 runs, as 에너젠, 에너진 and other forms, a German “Wir ENGENEs aus Berlin” came back as 엔지니어들, engineers, in one of 3 runs and in other wrong forms in the rest, and “Thank you for making us ENGENE” came back as 에넥스 in all 3 runs. The rule we added that day pins the spelling of every form to 엔진: 66 of 66 runs on our test sentences, and 18 of 18 on sentences we kept aside to check it. “Jay, thank you for loving us engenes so much” used to come back as 엔진즈 in 7 of 8 runs; it now comes back as 엔진, on the live site too. The sentence around the name is not always right yet: in that same sentence about Jake, 엔진 often sticks to his name, as 엔진 제이크, instead of meaning “us”. The lines below use the name the way ENGENE write it in Korean.
- The name ENGENE makes me proud — 엔진이라는 이름이 자랑스러워요 Make this into a card
- ENGENE will be ENHYPEN's strength — 엔진이 엔하이픈의 힘이 되어 줄게요 Make this into a card
- ENGENE and ENHYPEN grow together — 엔진과 엔하이픈은 함께 성장해요 Make this into a card
- ENGENE will keep cheering for you, never stopping — 엔진은 멈추지 않고 응원할게요 Make this into a card
What is ENHYPEN's lightstick called in Korean?
ENHYPEN's lightstick is called 엔진봉 in Korean: the fan name 엔진 plus 봉, stick. Its official product name is in English, OFFICIAL LIGHT STICK, but in Korean, fans and shops alike call it 엔진봉. At ENHYPEN's Seoul concert in September 2022, Sunghoon told the crowd that the 엔진봉 he could see from there looked as pretty as the fans themselves.
When a fan writes it as one word, our translator now gets it right, without a lightstick rule of its own. Before November 1, engenebong written as one word came back as a sound-out such as 엔제네봉 or 엔지니봉 in all 11 runs. Once 엔진 was pinned, the same word came back as 엔진봉 in 18 of 18 runs. Written as two words, engene bong now comes back as 엔진봉 in 37 of 54 runs and otherwise as 엔진 봉 with a space or 엔진 응원봉, ENGENE lightstick, which still reads right on a card. It also never drifted to another group's lightstick name, as some lightstick names we tested in earlier weeks did. The lines below write it as one word, 엔진봉.
- The moment I turn on my engenebong is the most exciting — 엔진봉 켜는 순간이 제일 설레요 Make this into a card
- Every engenebong carries an ENGENE's heart — 엔진봉 하나하나가 엔진의 마음이에요 Make this into a card
- ENHYPEN shines brighter than the engenebongs — 엔진봉보다 엔하이픈이 더 빛나요 Make this into a card
- I'll be waiting at the venue with my engenebong — 엔진봉 들고 공연장에서 기다릴게요 Make this into a card
What does ENHYPEN's greeting “connect” (커넥트) mean?
ENHYPEN greets fans with 커넥트, connect, followed by 안녕하세요, 엔하이픈입니다, hello, this is ENHYPEN. That is how the group introduced itself at its debut showcase on November 30, 2020. The word matches the name: a hyphen joins different words into a new meaning, and ENHYPEN stands for discovering one another and growing through connection.
This is one phrase we decided not to change. Our translator turns “One, two, connect! Hello, we are ENHYPEN!” into 하나, 둘, 연결!, a correct translation of the words, in all 3 runs before the ENGENE rule and all 3 after, while the Korean press report of the debut showcase writes the greeting itself as 커넥트. We judged that fans rarely quote the members' greeting in a message, so we left it out of the rules, and we would rather say so. If you want the greeting in your letter, write 커넥트 yourself; the first line below starts with it.
- Connect! ENHYPEN, I love you today too — 커넥트! 엔하이픈, 오늘도 사랑해요 Make this into a card
- Thank you for connecting us like a hyphen — 하이픈처럼 우리를 이어 줘서 고마워요 Make this into a card
- Even far apart, our hearts are always connected — 멀리 있어도 마음은 늘 이어져 있어요 Make this into a card
- I really want to hear your connect greeting in person — 커넥트 인사를 꼭 직접 듣고 싶어요 Make this into a card
